Netflix Original Dolemite Is My Name stars Eddie Murphy (Coming to America, The Nutty Professor) and is based on real life performer Rudy Ray Moore who created the Blaxploitation genre’s most famous character, Dolemite.
I have to start off by saying that I have sorely missed the Eddie Murphy of old that I grew up with being hilarious and raunchy back in the 80’s. I watched his comedy routines Raw and Delirious some many times I had his entire act memorized and was smacked by my mom numerous times for reenacting some of his bits in front of others. I have missed this man more than almost any other actor.
Blaxploitation is a genre from the 70’s that is looked down on and is rightfully problematic because of its over the top stereotypes. However, one undeniable positive is that it put people of color on the big screen in an era that movies just didn’t lend to leading roles. Enter down on his luck performer Rudy Ray Moore and the character he created Dolemite who he based on obscene stories that he had heard from a local. Moore would star in five movies as the character with the first film Dolemite being considered on of the greatest Blaxploitation films ever.
Classic Eddie Murphy returns a long side an all star cast: Titus Burgess, Keegan-Michael Key, Craig Robinson, Mike Epps, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Snoop Dogg, and Wesley Snipes.
