‘Dune: Messiah’ Happening Sooner Than Expected, Will Shoot This Summer

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Dune: Messiah is seemingly a go at Warner Bros. and Legendary.

According to DeadlineDenis Villeneuve is gearing up to begin shooting Dune 3 (for some reason, WB won’t commit to calling it Dune: Messiah at this time) this summer. The filmmaker and his team are already in pre-production on the movie, which is expected to adapt Frank Herbert‘s second Dune novel, Dune: Messiah.

In the novel, Paul “Muad’Dib” Atreides has ruled as Emperor for 12 years. By accepting the role of messiah to the Fremen, he has unleashed a jihad which has conquered most of the known universe, but is powerless to stop the lethal excesses of the religious juggernaut he has created. The title of the third film hasn’t been set.

No word yet on shooting locations for Dune: Messiah but the previous two movies were largely shot in Origo Studios, Hungary, Jordan, and Abu Dhabi. A release date also hasn’t been announced, although WB currently has a spot reserved on the release calendar for an untitled Villeneuve event film on December 18, 2026. It’s strongly believed Dune: Messiah will soon occupy that release date.

We’ll keep you posted as casting and other production information becomes available.

Are you surprised Villeneuve is moving forward with Dune: Messiah so soon? How do you think he’ll address the novel’s massive time jump?
