‘Earwig and the Witch’ Trailer: Studio Ghibli Debuts First CG-Animated Feature

GKIDS has released an official English-dubbed trailer for Earwig and the Witch. The first film from Studio Ghibli to be completely CG-animated. Let’s see how it looks below.

Huh, I am torn. The story looks good, but the animation leaves a lot to be desired. Studio Ghibli is known for their beautiful traditionally animated films, so the CG feels off. The faces look like something out of an early Pixar movie. I also feel like it is very reminiscent of, or inspired by, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Or do all young witches have talking cats?

The English dub version features the voices of Taylor Paige Henderson, Vanessa Marshall, Kacey Musgraves, Richard E. Grant, and Dan Stevens.

Plot Synopsis:

Growing up in an orphanage in the British countryside, Earwig has no idea that her mother had magical powers. Her life changes dramatically when a strange couple takes her in, and she is forced to live with a selfish witch. As the headstrong young girl sets out to uncover the secrets of her new guardians, she discovers a world of spells and potions, and a mysterious song that may be the key to finding the family she has always wanted.

Earwig and the Witch will air in Japan on December 30, 2020. It will be released in North America early 2021.
