Ghostbusters (2016), Paul Feig’s all-female reboot of the 1984 classic, became polarizing immediately upon its release announcement. Critics pointed to uneven humor, heavy reliance on CGI spectacle over practical effects, a script that often feels improvised without tight punchlines, and supporting characters (especially Leslie Jones’ Patty) that leaned into stereotypes. The marketing leaned hard into the gender-swap angle, which turned many off before seeing the movie.

On the flip side, fans believe the core cast of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones display genuine chemistry and comedic talent, with McKinnon’s oddball Holtzmann emerging as a breakout favorite for many viewers. Other praise is given to the ghost designs being creative, the action set-pieces being energetic, and cameos from the original team adding nostalgia without overwhelming the new story. Some believe it delivers plenty of laughs and visual flair, even if it never reaches the razor-sharp wit or cultural lightning-in-a-bottle status of the original.
