M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village (2004) is a period thriller set in an isolated 19th-century community plagued by mysterious creatures in the surrounding woods, and it is one of the most polarizing films in his career. Upon release and especially in retrospect, it has been heavily criticized for its slow-burn pacing that many found dull, a third-act twist that frustrated a large portion of the audience (with some calling it “cheating” or ridiculous), and themes that feel heavy-handed. Detractors often describe the film as pretentious, emotionally flat, and a major step down after The Sixth Sense and Signs, contributing to its reputation as one of Shyamalan’s first big disappointments.
Defenders of The Village will point to its gorgeous cinematography by Roger Deakins for creating a haunting and beautifully realized atmosphere that still holds up today. Also, lauding the performances for being strong across the board — particularly Bryce Dallas Howard in her breakout role, Joaquin Phoenix, and Adrien Brody — with the film building genuine tension and unease in its first two acts. They also love how the film explores interesting themes about fear, control, grief, and the dangers of insulating oneself from the world, which some viewers find thoughtful and resonant even after knowing the twist.
