Sony is remaking Single White Female, but there’s a catch.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) and Taylor Russell (Bones & All) are in negotiations to star in and produce a remake of the 1992 horror drama film that starred Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Jeff Sneider of The InSneider first reported the news. Sneider also noted that the title will likely be changed (the catch I mentioned earlier) since neither Ortega nor Russell are white. Ortega is of Mexican and Puerto Rican descent, while Russell was born to a white mother and black father.

The remake is in development at Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures, which has a deal with Sony. Both the original and forthcoming remake are based on John Lutz’s 1990 novel SWF Seeks Same. Lutz co-wrote the 1992 adaptation with Don Roos.

What Happens in Single White Female?

In the 1992 movie, Fonda played Allison, a woman who takes in Hedra (Leigh) as a roommate, only to bring into her Upper West Side flat a terrifying stalker worthy of a suspense thriller. Single White Female was a modest box office hit, grossing $48 million domestically against a production budget of $16 million. which was made for $16 million and grossed $48 million domestically. A direct-to-video sequel, Single White Female 2: The Psycho, was released in 2005 and starred Kristen Miller.
