Disney is finally going to do something with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
Per Deadline, Jon Favreau is writing and producing a live-action/animation hybrid series centered around Walt Disney’s first breakout cartoon star, Oswald. The Disney+ project is unrelated to the previous Oswald series that was announced for the streamer back in 2019.
Favreau has been a major player at Disney since the mid-2010s, directing the studio’s CG/live-action reimaginings of The Jungle Book (2016) and The Lion King (2019), which collectively grossed over $2.5 billion. He also created the first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, which premiered on Disney+ in 2019. He is also credited as an executive producer on the show’s spinoffs The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew. His next feature is The Mandalorian sequel, The Mandalorian & Grogu, which hits theaters in May 2026.
Who Is Oswald the Lucky Rabbit?
Created by Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal in 1927, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was a saucy and self-absorbed bunny who was the star of several cartoon shorts. However, after Universal took control of the character in 1928, Disney scrambled to create a replacement character, leading to the creation of Mickey Mouse. In 2006, Disney acquired the trademark for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit from Universal, bringing the character back under the Mouse House.
Disney hasn’t really done much with the character since 2006 besides the odd cameo appearance in animated projects, a major role in the Epic Mickey video game franchise, and daily “meet and greet” character appearances at Disney California Adventure. Favreau’s Oswald series will therefore be the most high-profile project yet for the character since his return to Disney.
