Movie Madness Tournament: Best of the 1980s Sweet Sixteen

It’s back! SAW’s 2nd Annual Movie Madness Tournament to determine what is the best movie of the 1980s. The process was started almost a year ago in order to decide the best of the best films from of the 80s. Films were graded by an intricate scoring system in order to eliminate bias and subjectivity to help find the best field of 64 films we could gather. We also had three vote in polls where you guys helped select the remaining films. Seeds and matchups are the only places where subjectivity came into play to help spread the movies out to avoid certain genres from being piled together.

The process is easy. Click on the official voting ballot below, vote for each matchup in round one, and submit your form. Voting for the Sweet Sixteen ends Sunday, March 21st at 11:59 pm CST. Check back on Monday, March 22nd to see who won and to vote for the Elite Eight Matchups. We will continue weekly until there is one movie standing tall above the rest as the best movie of the 1980s!

ROUND TWO BREAKDOWN

VHS Region

Big Winner: Aliens and E.T. eliminated both their opponents (Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Platoon) pretty easily with the same score of 70.6% to 29.4%.

Big Upset: #3 Aliens wasn’t really an upset over #3 Roger Rabbit but the margin of victory was somewhat surprising.

The Sweet Sixteen: #1 seed Ran has been hanging in there by a thread and Mr. Krueger may just cut it this round. The alien vs alien battle could be extremely tight as Aliens takes on E.T.

Training Montage Region

Big Winner: The Terminator takes down another victim pretty easily yet again with it eliminating Spike Lee’s joint.

Round Two: No real upsets but Raging Bull and The Shining barely moving on by only one vote each is pretty interesting.

The Sweet Sixteen: Robocop vs The Terminator is a fantasy battle come true for 80’s sci-fi fans everywhere.

DeLorean Region

Big Winner: There were no close battles here as all four top seeds destroyed their opponents pretty easily.

Round Two: I’m surprised that The Thing vs Batman wasn’t closer than a 70.6% to 29.4% butt whoopin.

The Sweet Sixteen: The Thing vs Back to the Future could have few people on melt-down watch come this time next week when the results are posted.

Yippie Ki Yay Region

Big Winner: Another region where all matchups weren’t even close. Come and See had a good run.

The Sweet Sixteen: Raiders of the Lost Ark vs The Princess Bride could cause an atomic bomb type of destruction across the wasteland no matter how this matchup goes down. It feels like it might get a bit personal up in here.
