There are a lot of juicy Indiana Jones 5 details in Empire’s coverage of the film, but one that will probably raise a few eyebrows is that the upcoming sequel will de-age Ford back to how he looked in the original trilogy. Here’s what director James Mangold had to say on why he de-aged Ford for the film’s opening setpiece, which is set at a castle swarming with Nazis in 1944:
“I wanted the chance to dive into this kind of full-on George-and-Steven old picture and give the audience an adrenaline blast. And then we fall out, and you find yourself in 1969. So that the audience doesn’t experience the change between the ‘40s and ‘60s as an intellectual conceit, but literally experiences the buccaneering spirit of those early days… and then the beginning of now.”
De-aging can be tricky to get right, but Ford seems to think it looks pretty convincing, stating,
“This is the first time I’ve seen it where I believe it. It’s a little spooky. I don’t think I even want to know how it works, but it works. Doesn’t make me want to be young, though. I’m glad to have earned my age.”
Indiana Jones 5 is set during the 1969 Moon Landing. Indy will be going up against Mads Mikkelsen’s Voller, an ex-Nazi involved with the moon-landing program at NASA who is inspired by the real-life Werner von Braun.
Indiana Jones 5 opens in theaters on June 30, 2023.
