Pixar Announces 2 New Original Films & ‘Monsters Inc. 3’

Pixar‘s upcoming film slate just got a bit bigger.

In a lengthy Wall Street Journal profile, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter announced three new animated movies, including a third entry in the studio’s popular Monsters, Inc. franchise. It’s not immediately clear who will direct the next big screen installment, although Docter did direct the 2001 original, while Dan Scanlon helmed the 2013 prequel, Monsters University.

Plot details — including where in the story’s timeline the action will occur — are being kept under wraps. However, it’s worth noting that Monsters, Inc. has already received a sequel in the form of the Disney+ animated series Monsters at Work.

Two new original movies were also unveiled. The first, Ono Ghost Market, is inspired by “Asian myths about supernatural bazaars where the living and dead interact.” It was originally developed as a television series (likely for Disney+) before being redeveloped into a film. The other new movie will be Pixar’s first-ever musical. Turning Red director Domee Shi is behind that one.

The three movies join the previously announced Toy Story 5GattoIncredibles 3 (which will not be directed by Brad Bird), and Coco 2. Pixar’s latest, Hoppers, hit theaters this weekend. You can read Thomas Riest’s review of the animated film for ScreenAge Wasteland here.

We’ll keep you posted when more information about these new Pixar movies becomes available.
