‘Coco 2’ Announced by Pixar, Sets 2029 Release Window

Pixar is making another sequel.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced today during The Walt Disney Company’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders that Coco 2 was in early development at Pixar Animation Studios. “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” said Iger. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

Following the announcement, Pixar confirmed the news on X, sharing the official logo for the sequel and revealing that the movie would be released in theaters in 2029. Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina or returning as director and co-director of Coco 2, having filled those same roles for the original 2017 film.

The First Coco Won 2 Academy Awards

Released in 2017, Disney and Pixar’s Coco introduced Miguel, a 12-year-old who dreamed of becoming a musician despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, who ventures to the vibrant Land of the Dead to unlock the real story behind his family history. The animated movie was a major critical and commercial success for the studio, receiving an approval rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $810 million worldwide. Coco also managed to win two Oscars, grabbing Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song (“Remember Me”) at the 90th Academy Awards.
