Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.
Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.
While the phrase “Disney live-action remake” has definitely seen a spike in usage since 2010, Alice in Wonderland wasn’t actually the first movie from the Mouse House to fit that bill. Instead, Disney took a crack at live-action remakes in the mid-1990s, with Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians, the latter of which got a 2000 sequel, the appropriately titled 102 Dalmatians.
However, with Disney releasing a new live-action remake of one of its animated classics every year (or two a year, as is the case for 2025), there are now over two dozen re-imaginings of their animated features. While Snow White hasn’t won over the Disney fandom (or SAW writer Romona Comet, according to her review), some of the company’s live-action remakes are actually quite entertaining and dare I say great.
So, the question I ask today is: what is the best Disney live-action remake?
Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book is probably the best live-action remake in my opinion, if we’re judging it on staying true to the original while adding some originality. If we’re just going with using the same characters and telling a largely new story then I have to go with either Pete’s Dragon or Christopher Robin.
So what about you, screenagers? Which live-action remake of Disney’s animated classics is the best?
I’ll see you in the trenches.
