Will Quentin Tarantino Actually Make His Tenth & Final Movie?

Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.

Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.

It’s a question that has been on everyone’s minds lately: will Quentin Tarantino actually make a tenth movie?

Earlier this month, Deadline reported that Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment have partnered to develop The Popinjay Cavalier, a new stage play by Tarantino that has been described as a “swashbuckling comedy.” The production is set to open in London’s West End in early 2027.

The official synopsis currently reads: Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen. A sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.

With The Popinjay Cavalier taking priority, the earliest Tarantino would begin working on his tenth movie is now mid-2027. Way back in 2009, the filmmaker stated that he planned to retire from filmmaking when he turned 60 to focus on writing novels and film literature.

In 2014, he reaffirmed his plan to direct only 10 movies, explaining, “I want to go out while I’m still hard. … I like that I will leave a 10-film filmography, and so I’ve got two more to go after this. It’s not etched in stone, but that is the plan. If I get to the 10th, do a good job and don’t screw it up, well that sounds like a good way to end the old career.”

Well, Tarantino is now 62 years old, and his tenth film is nowhere to be found. Some believe that Tarantino is dragging his feet on his final film because he accidentally made his perfect final film as his ninth, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

With Tarantino already focusing on written literature like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: A Novel (2021) and Cinema Speculation (2022) and the aforementioned stage play, he’s definitely acting like George R.R. Martin, doing absolutely anything but what fans want him to do, which, in Martin’s case is finish the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, is make his tenth movie.

What do I think? While I do think Tarantino will eventually get around to making a tenth movie, I do think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood‘s critical and commercial success spooked him a bit. He’s got to somehow top that now. This is why you don’t announce that your tenth film will be your last until it’s already in the can.

So what about you, screenagers? Do you think Quentin Tarantino’s tenth and final movie will ever see the light of day?

I’ll see you in the trenches.
