New Zealand actor Sam Neill has died at the age of 78.
Neill’s family confirmed his death via a post on the actor’s official Instagram account, which read, “It is with immense sadness that the whānau [family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life.”
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.”
“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
Neill will most likely be remembered for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park and two of its sequels. His other memorable film appearances include Sleeping Dogs (1977), Possession (1981), Dead Calm (1989), The Hunt for Red October (1990), The Piano (1993), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), and Event Horizon (1997).
On the small screen, he played Major Chester Campbell in the first two series of Peaky Blinders. Most recently, he appeared in the Netflix original series Untamed opposite Eric Bana.
Neill had wrapped filming on two movies, both of which are set to be released in 2027, before his death: Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort.
