Now we’ll never know who this little big-eared, green-looking fella is! Damn you, Lucasfilm!
According to Deadline, Star Wars: The Acolyte has been canceled after a single season, with Lucasfilm opting not to proceed with creator/showrunner Leslye Headland’s vision for the final years of The High Republic era.
The Acolyte was a mystery-thriller that took viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era. A former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes, but the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated.
As Deadline notes, the news isn’t entirely surprising, as the show struggled to unite the Star Wars fandom. Despite a strong viewership start (11.1 million views globally after five days), viewership reportedly fell off with only 335 million minutes streamed of the (now series) finale), which is believed to be the lowest ever for a Star Wars Disney+ finale.
The cost to make The Acolyte Season 1 also likely factored into a cancelation over renewal. Disney is as tight with money as Scrooge McDuck was before being visited by Three Ghosts on Christmas Eve. With streaming not the money-maker every studio thought it was going to be, expect to see less $100 million-budgeted television series in the future.
Star Wars fans can stream The Acolyte on Disney+.
