Written and directed by David Lynch, Dune is the first feature-length adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel of the same name. Set in the distant future, the movie chronicles the conflict between rival noble families as they battle for control of the extremely harsh desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune.
Dune was released on December 14, 1984, by Universal Pictures. The epic space opera movie was a box office failure, grossing just $37.9 million. While Dune received mostly negative reviews from critics upon release, it has since developed a cult following.
