We’re nearing the end of summer and finally some reprieve from the brutal heat is within view. In the meantime, we’ve still got air conditioning and plenty of things to watch on streaming. Here’s what I’ve been checking out recently, and let me know in the comments what you’ve been watching recently!
Hulu: No Other Choice (2025)
An absolute banger of a film that went almost completely unrecognized at last year’s Oscars, No Other Choice follows a Korean factory worker recently laid off from the job he’s worked most of his life. Left in a state of complete desperation, he contemplates anything and everything he can do to get another job. Directed by Park Chan-wook (of Old Boy and Decision to Leave fame), this film is a visual feast with a captivating lead performance from Lee Byung-hun. I reviewed this one when it first released and though it was worth seeing on the big screen, it’s still a wonderful watch on streaming.
FOR FANS OF: Squid Game; Parasite
Netflix: Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008)
Look, I know the cool new thing to watch is the Netflix remake, but frankly, why would I want to watch a slightly worse version of a story that the original already nails? In case you weren’t a child of the early 2000’s, Avatar: The Last Airbender is a Nickelodeon original story set in a fantasy world where the four elements (Water, Air, Earth, Fire) are able to be shaped and molded by gifted people called benders. Only the Avatar, a reincarnated spiritual being, can bend all four and broker peace between the four nations. What may sound like a boilerplate kids show on paper is probably one of the greatest tv shows of all time, tackling very adult themes like occupation, war, discrimination and experiencing death and loss. I’m rewatching it now and despite its dark themes, it’s an extraordinarily hopeful and uplifting watch. If you were thinking about checking out the new Netflix live action version, I recommend giving the original a try first.
FOR FANS OF: Steven Universe; Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Apple TV: Widow’s Bay (2026 – present)
This one surprised me in the best way possible. Widow’s Bay is a self-aware horror comedy about a small island trying to expand its tourism opportunities. The issue is that the island is absolutely cursed. Created by Katie Dippold (one of the main writers for Parks and Recreation), the show balances dry humor with some solid scares and creates a fun and very watchable series. The 10-episode first season is an easy watch, and I’m looking forward to seeing what they do next.
FOR FANS OF: What We Do In the Shadows, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
HBO Max: If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (2025)
Featuring possibly the best Rose Byrne performance I’ve ever seen, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You follows an overwhelmed mother as she cares for her disabled child. Both a surreal and emotionally taxing watch, the film dives into the difficult dynamics of the mother’s life with a starkness that forces you to sit in their uncomfortable and often unbearable moments with her. In any other year this would have been an easy Best Picture nominee, but since 2025 was so stacked, a lot of folks missed this one. Give it a watch!
FOR FANS OF: Sorry, Baby; Maid
Dropout: Game Changer (2019 – present)
I had avoided signing up for Dropout for a long time, mainly unwilling to add yet another streaming service to my monthly bills. I can solidly say that Dropout has a lot of great television, and Game Changer might be its best. Game Changer is a game show with a simple concept: the rules change every episode. The viewer follows along with the contestants in real time, trying to figure out the rules and gimmick of this week’s episode. As the show progresses, some of the ideas become truly ridiculous to behold, and with a contestant base filled with talented improv comics, it’s just an insanely entertaining watch. If you’re curious but don’t want to make the jump yet to sign up for a new streaming service, they have some free full episodes on YouTube, which is where I first checked them out. Definitely worth the watch if you’re looking to laugh a lot.
