‘Tis the season to… wait, it’s not even Halloween yet; why is Walmart already promoting the Christmas season? Bah humbug!

All kidding(?) aside, Walmart has partnered with The Muppets for some sort of ad campaign that invites audiences to reexperience the wonderful The Muppet Christmas Carol again (now with more Pepe the King Prawn).

It’s sad that this is the best Disney can do with the Muppets. Walton Goggins is a fine Scrooge, but he doesn’t hold a candle to Michael Caine. And while the callbacks to the 1992 holiday classic are fun, it all feels a bit hollow since the only reason this exists is to promote Walmart.

The Christmas commercial debuted Monday as part of Walmart’s holiday campaign, and features Goggins playing three news ghosts in Christmas Carol lore: the Ghost of Christmas Presents, the Ghost of Deals to Come, and the Ghost of Christmas Fast, all pegged to Walmart’s deals and holiday gift specials slated to roll out in the weeks ahead. Yay?
