To celebrate our seventh anniversary, the ScreenAge Wasteland team is sharing individual lists of our 100 favorite films of all time. Explore the full collection here.
There’s a difference between the greatest films ever made… and the films that become your films. “Best” usually lives in the language of consensus—technical achievement, historical importance, cultural impact, innovation, influence. It’s why certain titles are taught in film schools, preserved in archives, and debated by critics decades after their release. But “favorite” is something far more personal, and in many ways, far more revealing. Your favorite films aren’t always the most flawless, the most prestigious, or even the most universally acclaimed. They’re the ones that find a permanent home in your life. The ones you quote without realizing it. The ones you revisit on bad days, good days, or whenever you need a shot of cinematic serotonin.
These are the films you recommend to everyone, the hip pocket films you carry around with you, waiting to gift them to someone who will appreciate them. A truly favorite film doesn’t just impress you once—it invites you back. Rewatchability is one of cinema’s most underrated strengths. Some films hit like lightning on a first viewing, but once the surprise is gone, so is much of the magic. Others grow richer with time, offering more with each rewatch. Most of these films are not mine or anyone else’s idea of “the greatest,” but these are the ones I return to time after time. The ones that shaped my personal taste the most and the ones I’ve adopted as “mine” because no one else wanted them. Some are artsy fartsy, some are weird as hell, but they are all, for one reason or another, my favorites.
