The trailer for 20th Century Fox‘s Ad Astra has dropped and features a stellar cast, real-worldish science fiction and a slightly murky plot – at least so far. There’s a lot to unpack in this one, Wasteoids so buckle up.
This almost seems like several movies stitched together at this point; that may be not a bad thing, but there’s clearly a little bit of Interstellar, a little bit of Gravity and maybe even a touch of The Right Stuff. Pitt has been giving pretty much unimpeachable performances since he started truly reaching past his Hollywood handsome dude persona (I want to say, probably 2009’s Inglourious Basterds set him on the right path) and now he’s edging towards a chameleon-like ability to inhabit his roles.
Having Tommy Lee Jones as the McGuffin’s probably a nice move, even though the trailer shows us almost nothing other than old photographs; I’m guessing it will be rewarding to see the man show up at some point during the film’s climax.
So the world is ending due to this mysterious ‘Surge’; the Major’s dad is missing, there may be aliens with advanced technology that we’d love to get our hands on and he’s not even sure if he’s going to pass the psyche evaluation to complete the mission; the stakes can not possibly get any higher!
There seems like a lot going on, is my point.
Ad Astra is directed and co-written by James Gray (The Lost City of Z) and also stars Liv Tyler, Donald Sutherland, Ruth Negga and Ravi Kapoor.
Plot Synopsis:
Ad Astra will cross the barriers of space and time in movie theatres on the 20th of September 2019.
What do you guys think? Anyone want to see more grounded-feeling scifi and did this trailer grab you? And by grounded I mean a lunar rover demolition derby shoot-out that looks pretty badass.
