Benedict Wong appeared at this year’s Denver Pop Culture Con and LRM said Wong gave an update on Doctor Strange 2:
I know they’ve now got a writer on board who I met at the Endgame premiere. So I think that may be happening sometime next year.
It’s an interesting time to be an actor who appeared in a MCU solo film post-Avengers: Age of Ultron. Besides Ant-Man, nobody got a sequel before the two-part Infinity War/Endgame epic, and most of the Phase 3 solo film characters were dusted in the cliffhanger. Doctor Strange was one of the dusted, and by the time his second film hits theaters it will be roughly five to six years since 2016’s Doctor Strange.
That’s quite a long time to be away from the Sorcerer Supreme corner of the universe (I mean, Marvel really couldn’t find a way to squeeze Rachel McAdams into Endgame?), so it will be interesting to see where Marvel takes the character. The New York Sanctum was damaged when Hulk crashed through the roof in Infinity War, but was it fixed over the next five years? What did Wong do during Doctor Strange’s five-year dusting? Was Rachel McAdams’ character also dusted or did she move on from Stephen in those five years?
The post-Endgame films have a lot to answer about the decimation, subsequent five year gap, and then the return of the dusted. There are a lot of questions about how society has changed and how everyone reacted that myself and a lot of fans want Marvel to not brush under the rug.
Scott Derrickson is set to return as director for Doctor Strange 2 and it seems like Doctor Strange co-writer C. Robert Cargill may have been replaced or has a new co-writer. Cargill previously stated he wanted nightmare to be the sequel villain, but that was a while back. With the time stone gone it’s also possible Dormammu could return.
What sort of storylines do you want to see Doctor Strange 2 address?
