‘An American Pickle’ Trailer: Move Over Pickle Rick ‘Cause Here Comes Pickle Seth

HBO Max has released the official trailer for An American Pickle, which will star Seth Rogen as a man pickled for a hundred years AND his great-grandson. That’s twice as much Rogen as we’re used to seeing and probably twice too many.

Huh, that wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought it would be way more humorous, but both of Rogen’s characters seem down to earth and very different from the types he usually plays. I like how the “brined for 100 years” part isn’t just something that is easily waved away. The reporters shown in the trailer look pretty skeptical at how realistic human preservation via pickle vat is.

I don’t have HBO Max, so it’ll be a while before I see An American Pickle, but I did see in the comments somewhere else someone suggest that the inevitable sequel should be called An American Pickle in London. I think that’s a perfect tongue-in-cheek title. What about you?

Plot Synopsis:

Herschel Greenbaum (Seth Rogen), a struggling laborer, immigrates to America in 1920 with dreams of building a better life for his beloved family. One day, while working at his factory job, he falls into a vat of pickles and is brined for 100 years. The brine preserves him perfectly and when he emerges in present-day Brooklyn, he finds that he hasn’t aged a day. But when he seeks out his family, he is troubled to learn that his only surviving relative is his great-grandson, Ben Greenbaum (also played by Rogen), a mild-mannered computer coder whom Herschel can’t even begin to understand.

An American Pickle begins streaming August 6, 2020 on HBO Max.
