The next Ocean’s movie is officially in the can.
In a reel on Instagram, Josh Gad was able to finally shave off “this disgusting caterpillar,” a.k.a. his moustache, because the untitled Ocean’s Eleven prequel has finally finished filming.
“That’s a wrap on the new Ocean’s film and more significantly, that’s a wrap on the mustache. Can’t wait for you all to see what we’ve been cooking up for the last five months. It’s pretty damned special,” Gad captioned the reel.
The Ocean’s Franchise Is Returning to the Big Screen
The untitled Ocean’s prequel will be the fifth overall installment in the heist franchise. The first film, 2001’s Ocean’s Eleven, was a remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film of the same name. It made over $450 million at the box office, leading to two sequels — 2004’s Ocean’s Twelve and 2007’s Ocean’s Thirteen. Steven Soderbergh directed the trilogy, which featured an all-star ensemble cast led by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, and Matt Damon.
Eleven years after Thirteen, the franchise was revived with the standalone spinoff, Ocean’s 8, starring Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the sister of Clooney’s Danny Ocean. Like its predecessors, it too was a box office success. Despite this, no sequels were ever produced.
In 2022, a prequel film set in 1960s Europe, reportedly titled Oceans, was revealed to be in development. Margot Robbie was announced to star in and produce the prequel, with Jay Roach attached to direct. Ryan Gosling soon joined the production as the male lead, reuniting the stars of 2023’s Barbie. In December 2023, it was revealed that Robbie and Gosling would be playing the parents of Danny and Debbie Ocean.
By July 2025, Roach was no longer attached to direct, with Lee Isaac Chung in talks to replace him. Three months later, Chung was confirmed to direct, while Bradley Cooper was in talks to replace Gosling as Daddy Ocean.
However, more changes were afoot. In March 2026, Chung left the Ocean’s prequel over creative differences, leading Cooper to triple down by signing on to write and direct as well as star in the project. The following month at CinemaCon, Robbie revealed that the prequel will focus on Danny Ocean’s parents as they attempt to pull off a heist at the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix.
The Ocean’s Prequel’s Cast Is Full of Familiar Faces

Robbie, Cooper, and Gad are just a few of the fan-favorite actors who are part of the prequel’s ensemble cast. Wagner Moura, Monica Barbaro, Vicky Krieps, George MacKay, Omar Sy, Lauren Ridloff, and Jack Holden are also attached. Outside of Robbie and Cooper, no character details have been revealed for any of the actors.
The untitled Ocean’s Eleven prequel is scheduled to hit theaters on June 25, 2027.
