‘Artemis Fowl’ Trailer: Not the Criminal Mastermind You Remember Reading

Disney has just released the new Artemis Fowl trailer, and apparently it’s causing fan outrage. Let’s take a look.

This feels like an adaptation from the 2000s. Seriously, it looks like the failed book-to-screen attempts for The City of Ember, Inkheart, and The Golden Compass. But that’s not what’s causing the fan outrage.

Apparently, in the books Artemis Fowl is a ruthless, cold-blooded criminal mastermind. Yet, the trailer doesn’t show us much of that. Sure, Artemis looks highly skilled in combat, but he looks like a kid. A kid that isn’t a ruthless, cold-blooded criminal mastermind.

I guess some other important plot details have been changed as well, but I don’t care. I sort of think a film focusing on a ruthless criminal mastermind would be a nice change of pace for Disney. At the same time, I can’t help but wonder when the film fails (and it will fail) if Disney won’t attempt to reconfigure the franchise into a Disney+ series. There’s obviously a passionate fan base, and Disney hates leaving a potential cash cow out in the sun.

But, if you want to know what I want, it’s a Percy Jackson Disney+ series that faithfully adapts the source material. That’s all I want Disney, make it so.

Plot Synopsis:

Disney’s “Artemis Fowl,” based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared. With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies. Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan—so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.

Artemis Fowl hits theaters May 29, 2020.
