Straight off his Oscar nomination, Variety reports that Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of Uncharted.
Banderas is currently experiencing an acting renaissance. In addition to his Oscar-nominated role in Pain and Glory, he also received acclaim for his portrayal of Pablo Picasso in Genius season 2. He will next be seen in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.
Additionally, Sophia Ali (Truth or Dare) and Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) have been added. The three join Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. It is unknown who Banderas, Ali and Gabrielle will be playing in the film.
Sony has been trying to get an Uncharted adaptation off the ground for years and it now looks like it’s finally coming together. Variety also confirms that Ruben Fleischer (Venom) has closed a deal to direct.
Although I haven’t been a fan of the direction to make this a prequel to the events of the video game series, I’m happy to be getting it at all. Wahlberg has recently spoke with Collider about Uncharted and praised the script:
“It’s exciting because, without giving too much away, it’s more of an origin story. Meeting them, and Nathan becoming Nathan. Sully and him meeting, trying to not only get over on each other, but also starting to partner up and develop that relationship. It’ll be very cool. It’s the first time I’m in a movie that’s a movie. I felt like when I was reading it, I was reading Indiana Jones or Thomas Crown Affair. It’s got these great elements of these heist movies and adventure movies like I’ve never been a part of.”
Nathan Drake is definitely a modern-day Indiana Jones, so I’m glad that the script has elements of that tone in it. I’m all for adventure-heist movies.
Wahlberg also confirmed that filming will begin in two weeks. Uncharted hits theaters March 5, 2021.
Are you excited to see Uncharted finally getting closer to becoming a reality? Do you think Banderas will play the antagonist?
