Universal has released an official trailer for Fast X, the upcoming tenth mainline entry in the Fast & Furious franchise. Let’s take a look.
If there’s one thing The Fast Saga has been consistently doing since the fourth film it is insane retcons. Sung Kang‘s Han was so popular in the third film? Fuck it, let’s make the next three and a half films prequels to Tokyo Drift. Why did we kill Michelle Rodriguez‘s Letty in the fourth film? What do you mean? She’s coming back in the sixth film! She never died, she just had amnesia! Deckard Shaw killed Han in an act of revenge. WRONG! Han faked his own death and now Shaw is buddies with Dom. Honestly, I have another paragraph of retcons I’m willing to write up, but I won’t. Oh wait, one more, Dom and Mia have a secret brother, played by John Cena! Okay, now I’m done.
Anyway, Jason Momoa being revealed as the son of Fast Five‘s villain, Hernan Reyes, is actually a pretty damn clever retcon. Fast Five is arguably the strongest Fast Saga movie and if this means that Fast X won’t be as ridiculous as F9 then I am all for it. Except, this film is already ridiculous by suggesting that Dom’s son is already 8 years old despite being a baby in 2017’s The Fate of the Furious, but *shoulder shrug* oh well.
Directed by Louis Leterrier, Fast X stars returning cast members Vin Diesel, Rodriguez, Kang, Cena, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Jason Statham, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren, and Charlize Theron.
The film also features an extraordinary new cast including Brie Larson as Tess, a rogue representative from the Agency; Alan Richtson as Aimes, the new head of the Agency who doesn’t hold the same fondness for Dom’s crew as his predecessor, Mr. Nobody; Daniela Melchior as a Brazilian street racer with a powerful tie to Dom’s past; and Rita Moreno as Dom and Mia’s Abuelita Toretto.
Plot Synopsis:
Fast X opens in theaters on May 19, 2023.
