First Look at DCU Animated Series ‘Creature Commandos’

James Gunn has unveiled a first look at Creature Commandos, an upcoming seven-episode animated series set in the DC Universe.

In the image (going from left to right), we have Rick Flag, Sr. (who Gunn states will be showing up in other stuff), Nina Mazursky, Doctor Phosphorus (a Batman villain), Eric Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein (the show’s lead), G.I. Robot, and Weasel (yes, the one from The Suicide Squad).

“The first series that we’re doing, and I’ve already written the entire series, is Creature Commandos,” Gunn told DC.com. “This is an animated TV series and this is art from the animation company that’s doing it. Creature Commandos is based on the great team from DC. What we’re doing with the DCU is we’re having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies and games all intertwine within the same universe. We’re going to cast actors that are going to be able to play the characters in this, as well as in other things, some of which we’ve already cast. I’ve written all seven episodes of this show and it’s in production now.”

The Creature Commandos are a team of military superhumans that originally appeared in Weird War Tales #93 (1980). They were created by writer J. M. DeMatteis and artist Pat Broderick. The original team’s missions took place during World War II. A modern team headlined their own miniseries in 2000. The DCU version will be set in the present day (obviously if Weasel is involved).

Creature Commandos will release on HBO Max. A release date has not been announced at this time, but the is expected to premiere before Superman: Legacy opens in theaters in July 2025.
