Godzilla Minus Zero isn’t even in theaters yet, but all eyes are already on filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki‘s English-language debut Grandgear, which just added Paul Giamatti to its cast.

According to Deadline, Giamatti is in talks to join Grandgear, opposite Sam Nivola and Nico Parker, who reportedly have the two most prominent parts in the film. A chemistry test is said to have landed them their undisclosed roles.

Yamazaki is directing from an original screenplay he penned, the plot of which remains under wraps. Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams is producing along with Glen Zipper for Sony. Production is expected to start in 2027.

Giamatti can be seen next in the A24 dramedy The Debut, which made its world premiere at this year’s Telluride Film Festival. Nivola was part of the ensemble for the last season of The White Lotus, while Parker is the female lead in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

Yamazaki is a Japanese filmmaker and visual effects supervisor who broke out with Godzilla Minus One. He became the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. His follow-up, Godzilla Minus Zero, recently premiered at the New York Film Festival, ahead of its theatrical release on November 6, 2026.

As for Grandgear, Sony has already dated the picture for release in theaters on January 14, 2028.
