How Many More Jokers and Batmen Do You Think You Will See in Your Lifetime?

Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.

Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.

With The Batman giving us yet another new Batman actor in live-action, the number of actors who have portrayed the Dark Knight is steadily growing. In the last decade, three actors have stepped into the role in film (Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, Robert Pattinson), not to mention the various actors who have played a young Bruce Wayne in film and television. With Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney having also played the Batman in live-action over the last sixty years, there is a slight, but good chance that some readers here have lived through every new incarnation of the Batman.

And with every Batman, there must also be a Joker. While not quite as high, there have been plenty of actors who have taken on the role. So, the question I ask today is a specific one: how many more actors will be cast to play Batman/Joker in live-action (film or TV) in your lifetime?

This would have been a lot easier to answer if the DC Extended Universe hadn’t turned out to be such a joke. If audiences had loved Jared Leto’s take on the Joker, we probably wouldn’t have gotten Joaquin Phoenix’s take. And if Ben Affleck didn’t drop out of The Batman then Robert Pattinson’s version wouldn’t exist either.

Instead, Affleck and Leto would probably be in these roles for the next 5+ years. That’s not the case though and there’s a possibility Warner Bros. might announce a new unconnected film anytime. But, since this is just for fun anyway, let’s do the math.

If Pattinson and his version of Batman characters stay in the role for the next six years, and Phoenix does Joker 2, I’m going to say that we won’t have a new actor step into either role until at least 2030. Then, if I stay healthy and alive for the following fifty years, and comic book films don’t all become box office poison, I’d say I’m going to see at least 10 more actors take on Batman in live-action, and probably 9 more actors play the Joker. I could probably add 1 more to each of those totals to take into consideration a possible live-action Batman series, but I doubt that will ever happen. So 10 for Batman and 9 for the Joker. That’s what I’m going with.

So what about you, screenagers? How many more actors do you think will play the Caped Crusader and the Clown Prince of Crime in your lifetime?

I’ll see you in the trenches.
