Is ‘Citizen Kane’ Boring?

Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.

Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.

Let’s cut to the chase with this one. This is a discussion that happens regularly around the SAW office. Good old back and forth bickering over boredom versus greatness, so we thought we bring you guys into the fray. There is no denying Citizen Kane’s importance to cinema, technical proficiency, critical acclaim, and its crown as arguably the greatest movie ever. However, at the end of the day, are you entertained by it? We can talk all day about its importance and legacy to film. Its innovations and techniques are well documented but many have argued about how great it is compared to how much of a bore it can be. There are plenty of older films that appeal to today’s generation in terms of entertainment value. Therefore. we are drawing a line in the sand today and want to open up the floor for you to speak your mind on the classic film. Please, give some reasoning as to what you think and why.

So the question I ask today is: Is Citizen Kane boring?

I’m sorry but I was bored out of my mind by it but I have readily admitted to struggling with older movies period. There are some that I just love but this ain’t one. It was a movie I only watched to cross off the list of must-watch movies and will probably never watch again. Don’t get me wrong, I recognize it’s greatness and will argue its rightful place as an all-time great as I wipe away the sleep from eyes that it caused. Some can be entertained by the technical side of things and on the importance of a movie alone. There are some movies that I enjoy because what the director, editor, cinematographer, etc. have done behind the camera but this ain’t one of them.

So what about you, folks? Is Citizen Kane boring?

I’ll see you in the trenches.
