Dolores Umbridge, the pink-clad, kitten-obsessed Senior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic portrayed by Imelda Staunton in the Harry Potter films (most prominently in Order of the Phoenix), is frequently cited as one of the most despised characters in the entire franchise. Viewers often loathe her for her sickly-sweet cruelty, authoritarian control over Hogwarts, discriminatory policies against “half-breeds” and students, and her use of torture (the blood quill) disguised as discipline. Many find her more infuriating than outright villains like Voldemort because her brand of evil feels deeply realistic, bureaucratic, institutional, and cloaked in politeness and bureaucracy.
However, some found her delightful and a breath of fresh air, as she opposed the utterly annoying Harry Potter and his crew, with their nauseatingly rebellious antics. Her strict enforcement of rules and order feels like a refreshing counter to the constant chaos and favoritism at Hogwarts. Watching her slap Harry across the face in Order of the Phoenix was extremely satisfying as it was a rare moment of someone actually holding the arrogant, rule-breaking protagonist accountable. Staunton’s performance is deliciously vile in the best way, turning Umbridge into a memorable force of unapologetic authority that many secretly (or not so secretly) rooted for amid all the Gryffindor sanctimony.
So what do you think? Is Dolores Umbridge overhated or not? Vote and let us know your answer below!
