Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.

Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.

The week is almost over, so I thought let’s have some fun with today’s question. Dwayne Johnson and John Cena are both actors who got their start wrestling with the WWE. Johnson transitioned to acting first, starring in some real duds before Fast Five helped launch him into A-list territory. Cena is, in my opinion, still making his mark in Hollywood, but so far 2021 is proving to be his year.

They also both had films recently hit theaters. Johnson had Jungle Cruise and Cena had The Suicide Squad. Which means now is the perfect time to have fans look through the rest of their filmographies because I want to ask: which actor is better? Dwayne Johnson or John Cena?

This is tough. I think Dwayne Johnson will always be the bigger box office star, but I think if I had to choose between the two in terms of who is more likely to win an acting Oscar, I’d pick Cena.

His role in F9 did nothing for me, but I think The Suicide Squad is the best thing he’s done yet. Peacemaker is the type of character that plays to Cena’s strengths as an actor. And if Peacemaker was the role James Gunn originally had Dave Bautista in mind for, well… I also think Cena’s portrayal would be better than whatever Bautista would have done with the character.

Plus, every character Dwayne Johnson plays is just a slightly different version of a previous Dwayne Johnson character. I love the Rock, but he either plays a variation of Luke Hobbs or Jumanji‘s Bravestone. At least I’m seeing some differences in the two performances I’ve seen of Cena this year.

So yeah, my pick is John Cena (and that conclusion surprises even myself).

So what about you, folks? Who is the better actor?

I’ll see you in the trenches.
