Green Book was a major commercial and awards success, winning three Oscars, including Best Picture, but it has since become one of the more debated Best Picture winners of the past decade. Critics and many viewers have accused the movie of being a simplistic “white savior” narrative that centers Tony’s (Viggo Mortensen) perspective while reducing Dr. Shirley (Mahershala Ali) to a reserved, almost passive character. It has also faced criticism for historical inaccuracies, softening the realities of racism, leaning into stereotypes, and presenting a feel-good, sanitized version of race relations in America for its time period. Shirley’s family publicly disputed the film’s portrayal of him, adding fuel to the backlash.

On the positive side, Green Book is widely praised for its strong performances, particularly Mahershala Ali’s dignified and layered turn and Viggo Mortensen’s charismatic, funny work as Tony. Many feel the movie delivers genuine warmth, humor, and heart through the evolving friendship between the two leads. Also noting that it features solid period production design and handles themes of prejudice, class, and common humanity in an accessible, crowd-pleasing way that resonated with many audiences.

Does the intense criticism stem from the film winning Best Picture over the likes of Roma and BlacKkKlansman? Or because people genuinely dislike the movie for its polished, mainstream Hollywood take on race rather than a raw or revolutionary one?
