Steven Seagal rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s as an action star with a distinct aikido-based fighting style in hits like Above the Law, Hard to Kill, and Under Siege. Over time, however, his reputation has taken a heavy hit. He is frequently criticized for wooden acting, repetitive “one-man army” formulas, increasingly limited mobility in fight scenes as he aged, and a string of low-budget direct-to-video films that many consider lazy cash-grabs. His off-screen behavior has drawn even harsher scrutiny, mainly due to on-set misconduct stories from co-stars and crew, and allegations of sexual misconduct.
On the other hand, Seagal deserves credit for popularizing aikido in mainstream American action cinema at a time when karate and kung fu dominated, and for bringing a calmer, more realistic martial arts approach compared to the flashy styles of the era. Under Siege (1992) remains a genuinely well-regarded action thriller with strong supporting performances and tight direction, and several of his early films still hold cult appeal for their no-nonsense, straightforward storytelling and Seagal’s undeniable screen presence and physical imposing stature. Some viewers continue to enjoy his straightforward “good guy beats up bad guys” formula as comforting, low-stakes entertainment.
So what do you think? Is Steven Seagal overhated or not? Vote and let us know your answer below!
