‘Jason Bourne’ Reboot Could Be on the Way as Universal Loses Rights to Action Franchise

Matt Damon as Jason Bourne

We may have seen the last of Matt Damon as Jason Bourne.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal no longer holds the rights to the spy franchise. WME is currently in the process of shopping the Bourne rights and the rest of the Robert Ludlum library on behalf of the late author’s estate. Skydance, Apple, and Netflix have reportedly met with the estate to enquire about the rights. Universal could also end up with Bourne again so long as the studio made an attractive bid.

No word yet on whether Damon would be involved with a future Bourne movie or show. The actor famously portrayed the character across four live-action movies — The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Jason Bourne — between 2002 and 2016. The last movie made $415 million worldwide, enough to earn it the title of the second highest-grossing installment in the franchise.

Bourne 6 Got Stuck in Development Hell

Despite Jason Bourne‘s commercial success, Universal had trouble getting another sequel into production. In November 2023, Conclave‘s Edward Berger became attached to a sixth Bourne movie (or fifth if you’d like to forget about the 2012 Damon-less The Bourne Legacy). However, nothing ever materialized, with Berger himself admitting this past October that he was unclear whether the sequel would move forward.

We’ll keep you posted as to who ends up with the rights to Jason Bourne.

Do you want another Damon-led Bourne movie or is it time for the franchise to get rebooted?
