Tron: Ares is bringing back the actor who started it all: Jeff Bridges.

During a chat with the Film Comment podcast (via Deadline), the actor revealed that he would begin filming on the threequel on Saturday (Apr. 27). “I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the Tron story. Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him; I’ve admired his work,” he told the podcast.

With production on Tron: Ares having started in January, it doesn’t seem like Bridges’ role in the upcoming movie will be that large. We also don’t know whether Bridges is playing Kevin Flynn or Flynn’s hacking program, Clu.

However, based on available plot details, it looks like Ares will be a largely standalone installment in the long-running sci-fi franchise. Jared Leto is playing a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson also star. Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is directing from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.

Tron: Ares is set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025.
