Movie Madness Tournament: Best of the 1980s Round Two

It’s back! SAW’s 2nd Annual Movie Madness Tournament to determine what is the best movie of the 1980s. The process was started almost a year ago in order to decide the best of the best films from of the 80s. Films were graded by an intricate scoring system in order to eliminate bias and subjectivity to help find the best field of 64 films we could gather. We also had three vote in polls where you guys helped select the remaining films. Seeds and matchups are the only places where subjectivity came into play to help spread the movies out to avoid certain genres from being piled together.

The process is easy. Click on the official voting ballot below, vote for each matchup in round one, and submit your form. Voting for Round Two ends Sunday, March 14th at 11:59 pm CST. Check back on Monday, March 15th to see who won and to vote for the Sweet Sixteen Matchups. We will continue weekly until there is one movie standing tall above the rest as the best movie of the 1980s!

VHS Region

Big Winner: Aliens and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? tied for the biggest margins of victory in round one defeating Fitzcarraldo and Say Anything 90% to 10% each.

Big Upset: No real upsets this round other than A Nightmare on Elm Street and Airplane! being lower seeds that won. Although, we did almost lose our first #1 seed of the tournament with Ran narrowly beating Rain Man by just a couple of votes.

Round Two: Tougher matchups this round. #1 Ran could fall to #9 The Killer. #12 ANOES vs #13 Airplane! could be interesting but I see ANOES taking that one. #3 Roger Rabbit vs #6 Aliens is probably the most unpredictable matchup of this region. Could go either way. #2 E.T. should defeat #7 Platoon easily.

Training Montage Region

Big Winner: #4 The Shining had the biggest margin of victory in this region with a 90% to 10% victory.

Big Upset: #11 Robocop is the only low seed to win but no much of an upset over #6 OUATIA. Seeing #9 Thief eke out a win over #8 Elephant Man makes my heart happy.

Round Two: #1 Raging Bull should knock out #9 Thief. *tear emoji* #4 The Shining vs #5 Blade Runner should be a barn burner with this battle being up for grabs. Feels like #3 Amadeus will be going home early against #11 Robocop. #2 Do the Right Thing vs #7 The Terminator is an interesting matchup where I see Terminator eliminating Spike Lee’s joint.

DeLorean Region

Big Winner: Poor #16 Kagemusha never stood a chance but at least it received one vote against the mighty #1 Empire Strikes Back.

Big Upset: Several upsets this region with #10 Akira, #11 The Thing, #13 Scarface, and #14 Batman all being lower seeds to move on to the next round.

Round Two: #1 ESB might have its hands full against #8 The Road Warrior this round. We might be saying goodbye to #13 Scarface’s little friend in its matchup against #5 Stand By Me. Voting for #11 The Thing vs #14 Batman is just cruel. Who made these matchups? #2 BTTF should handle #10 Akira pretty easily.

Yippie Ki Yay Region

Big Winner: The only 100% winner of the entire first round was #1 Raiders of the Lost Ark over #16 The Verdict. RIP.

Big Upset: #10 Die Hard, #11 Ghostbusters, and #13 The Untouchables were the lower seeds to move here but nothing too shocking.

Round Two: #1 Raiders should continue to roll but #8 Big will be a bit of a tester this round. I see #4 The Princess Bride easily defeating #12 The Untouchables. #11 Ghostbusters will also take down another higher seed as should #10 Die Hard.
