You know what time it is. We’ve got so little time but so many movies to watch. Thankfully, I saved you some of the time it takes to search for what movies are actually worth watching on the various streaming services you may or may not be subscribed to.
Below are some great movies streaming now on Disney Plus, Prime Video, Netflix, Hulu, and Paramount Plus, you should check out this month (yes, the list includes spooky movies for the Halloween season).
Disney Plus: Remember the Titans (2006)
This probably would have been better in September as an “end of summer” movie, but football vibes are still extremely high in October. It can certainly be cheesy at times and a gross oversimplification of some the difficult subject matter that it tackles (pun, as always, intended). However, it’s still an incredibly effective heartwarming and inspiring movie. Denzel is locked in for one of his most memorable performances. Plus it’s easily one of the most quotable sports movies of all time.
FOR FANS OF: Rudy; The Sandlot; Coach Carter
Prime Video: Doctor Sleep (2019)
Legacy sequels are always a dangerous game. Most of the time they fall flat. Filled with cheap references to the original, bringing back beloved cast members for cameos, or lazy and contrived narrative continuations. Luckily, Doctor Sleep is not one of those legacy sequels. It’s a perfect blend of homage to the original movie, honoring of the source material that said movie steers so far from, and adaption of the follow up novel that this film is based on. Mike Flanagan is one of the most exciting voices working in horror right now and Doctor Sleep was an early example of him proving that he’s got the goods.
FOR FANS OF: The Shining; The Conjuring; It

Netflix: His House (2020)
This is one of those Netflix original movies that totally kicks ass but you never hear about because they don’t market it at all or even attempt to put anywhere close to the front page of the site. His House is a fresh take on the haunted house sub-genre. Horror is great because it allows filmmakers and storytellers creative avenues to explore real world terrors and fears in a creative and abstract way. In this case, writer and director Remi Weekes tells the story of South Sudanese refugees in England struggling with the terrors of adjusting to their new life in a new land. A worthwhile addition to the spooky movie rotation this October.
FOR FANS OF: Barbarian; Paranormal Activity; Poltergeist
Hulu: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a wonderful film because it asks one of the best questions that any piece of media could ask – what if one of our most famous heads of state also had the most badass side profession? I’m typically someone who stays away from asking for cinematic universes, but I would love more movies about former presidents hunting monsters. Teddy Roosevelt as a werewolf slayer; Jimmy Carter fighting off zombies; George W. Bush as a ghost hunter. The possibilities are endless. Let’s have some fun. Until we get those though, we’ll just have to continue watching Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.
FOR FANS OF: Blade; Underworld; Van Helsing
Paramount +: Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Many would argue that this is Tim Burton’s last truly great film. Whether that’s true or not, it’s an incredibly fun movie. Sleepy Hollow is a great movie for the season for those who aren’t looking for something incredibly scary but spooky enough to get in the mood. The Christopher Walken casting is absolutely inspired. Johnny Depp is perfect as Ichabod Crane. Burton’s eye for set design and atmosphere building lends itself to everything that this film needs to be. Even if you’ve seen it before, it’s rewatchability is surprisingly good.
FOR FANS OF: Edward Scissorhands; Bram Stoker’s Dracula; Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
