New ‘Cats’ Trailer: Watch If You Dare

Universal has released a new trailer for Cats, so if you dare to watch it make sure you have some bleach nearby to pour on your eyes after.

I continue to be amazed that this film managed to rope in acting and signing legends like Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, and Taylor Swift. Was no one told that they would be playing CGI cats? Did they see concept art beforehand? This film just looks absolutely ridiculous.

But, if you thought the CGI cats looked better than they did in the first trailer, there’s a reason for that. Director Tom Hooper told Empire that the backlash of the first trailer caused the CGI to evolve:

“I was just so fascinated because I didn’t think it was controversial at all. So it was quite entertaining. [He went on to confirm the CGI was at an early development stage in the original trailer, saying the film’s visual effects artists found] in the extremity in some of the responses, some clues in how to keep evolving [the production].  [Some of the cats’ designs] have moved on since then, and certainly our understanding of how to use the technology to make them work has gone up, too”.

Plot Synopsis:

Over the course of a single night, a tribe of cats called the Jellicles make what is known as ‘the Jellicle choice’ and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The Cats stage production had its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 years. In 1983, the Broadway production arrived and ran for 18 years. And now, at last, her ewe are, with the Cats movie. The film “reimagines the musical for a new generation with spectacular production design, state-of-the-art technology, and dance styles ranging from classical ballet to contemporary, hip-hop to jazz, street dance to tap.”

Cats hits theaters December 20, 2019.

If you’re planning on seeing this in theaters, I hope you’ll be high on catnip or something.
