‘Pinocchio’ First Look: He’s a Real Puppet!

Disney+ has offered us our first official look at Tom Hanks and unnamed puppet as Geppetto and Pinocchio in Robert Zemeckis’ live-action adaptation of Pinocchio. Check out the still above.

The live-action adaptation, based on both the classic children’s novel The Adventures of Pinocchio and Disney’s 1940 animated classic, is set to premiere exclusively on the streaming service sometime in September 2022.

In addition to Hanks, the cast for Pinocchio includes:

  • Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the voice of Pinocchio,
  • Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Pinocchio’s guide Jiminy Cricket,
  • Cynthia Erivo as the Blue Fairy,
  • Keegan-Michael Key as “Honest” John,
  • Lorraine Bracco as Sofia the Seagull, and
  • Luke Evans as The Coachman.

Zemeckis wrote the script for his adaptation with Chris Weitz. It will be interesting to see just how faithful Zemeckis sticks to the original Disney film, or if he might shake the story up a bit. Fingers crossed he decides to take Pinocchio on some new adventures.

What do you think of the first look? Do you find the puppet sort of creepy to see in “live-action” after only seeing it in animation for 80+ years?
