Roland Emmerich to Direct Sci-fi Action Flick ‘Moonfall’

The Wrap is reporting that Roland Emmerich is lining up to write and direct a new sci-fi action film titled Moonfall.

The project, which is currently in pre-production is aiming for a start date of the first quarter of 2020 will be co-written with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen. They will then present the film to buyers at the Cannes Film Festival market.

The story, which sounds like something we’ve heard before, will feature the good old ragtag team of astronauts who are forced to land on the moon’s surface after it is knocked out of Earth’s orbit, and sends it hurtling on a collision course with Earth threatening all of mankind.

While it may sound like a familiar story, we all know Emmerich is pretty damn good at delivering end of the world movies with all-star casts, so color me intrigued.

Plot Synopsis:

The Moon. It controls our nights, our days, the seasons, and our ocean tides. And since the beginning of humankind, its phases stood as a symbol of enlightenment, inner knowledge – and our own immortality. Until now. Suddenly and without warning a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface, unlock its secrets, and save our planet from annihilation. But first they must battle an unknown and unfathomable power that will challenge everything we know about the moon, the universe, and ourselves.

While Moonfall has no official release date, it will be the next big project from Emmerich after he finishes up Midway, a historical war epic about the Battle of Midway.
