Movie: Superman Returns (2006)

Scene: Superman’s return.

THE PLAYERS

Director: Bryan Singer

Characters: Superman (Brandon Routh) Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth) and the whole world.

THE SETUP

Superman has been gone for five years. He left Earth to see if he could find and survivors of his home planet Krypton. When he didn’t find anyone out there, he returned to earth and resumed his identity as Clark Kent. Unfortunately Lex Luthor finds the Fortress of Solitude and steals some Kryptonian crystals, and uses them in an experiment that causes a power outage on the East Coast. This disruption just so happens to interfere with a flight test of a Space Shuttle that is being launched into space while piggy-backed to an airliner. And wouldn’t you know it, Lois Lane is onboard and covering the shuttle story.

THAT SCENE

THE EXECUTION

Say what you want about Bryan Singer in real life, but god damn does he create an epic scene here. It really sucks you in and reintroduces you and the world to Superman in an awesome way. Sure the movie isn’t perfect, but this scene alone is outstanding and worth the watch. It’s action packed and it makes you happy that Superman is back home to save the day. I wish Routh had another shot at the Man of Steel.

What do you think of this scene? Did you find it intense and well done? Do you think it should have ranked higher on our best superhero scenes? I sure do.
