‘The Mummy’ Reboot Adds John Hannah to Returning Cast

Another key piece of Universal‘s The Mummy franchise has just been locked down.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Hannah will reprise his role as Jonathan Carnahan, who the trade describes as the less-then-trustworthy brother of Rachel Weisz’s Evelyn, a thief who, over the course of the original movies made, is always on the make, gaining and losing spoils, and ends each adventure with a little something in his pocket, even as ancient cities and treasures crumble around him and his friends.

Hannah was the only other actor to appear in all three of the original Mummy movies with lead star Brendan Fraser, who is also returning for the forthcoming reboot. Weisz declined to return for 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and was replaced with Maria Bello. Her involvement in the upcoming reboot all but confirms that the 2008 sequel will be stricken from canon.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (a.k.a. Radio Silence) are helming the reboot, which has a script by David Coggeshall. Plot details remain under wraps, although the movie is expected to take place in the late 1940s or 1950s, given the passage of time since the 1999 original, which was set in 1920s Egypt.

Filming is slated to begin this fall in London and Morocco, ahead of the movie’s theatrical release on May 19, 2028.

Which other returning stars from The Mummy are you hoping will also be back for the reboot, and why is it Dwayne Johnson?
