Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.
Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.
We’re a bit over the halfway mark of 2021, so maybe this question is coming too late, but I don’t care. COVID-19 has still impacted this year’s release schedule meaning some films have been further delayed and some got some weird streaming/theatrical hybrid release.
However, that doesn’t mean that there haven’t been a lot of good films that have come out this year. For one, all the Oscar bait was released in the first three months of 2021 thanks to the Academy extending the eligibility period. Blockbusters also made a (small) comeback in theaters this summer. So there has been plenty for everyone to like.
So the question I ask today is: what have been some of your favorite movies of 2021?
I have four films from 2021 that I think all have their bright spots.
The Suicide Squad was leagues better than the 2016 film and is probably one of the best DCEU films. Great action, comedy, and violence.
Jungle Cruise has been the closest Disney has gotten to replicating what made the first few Pirates of the Caribbean films so damn rewatchable.
Old has an intriguing mystery that keeps you wondering what will happen next. I’m still not sure how I feel about the ending, but I still had a great time watching it in theaters.
Free Guy might be the best film of 2021 I’ve seen so far. And it might actually be the best video game movie of all time. A fun concept with a great cast and some stellar “Disney” Easter eggs.
So what about you, folks? What movie, released in 2021, has been your favorite?
I’ll see you in the trenches.
