Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.
Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.
When you ask someone which superhero they would become if given the choice, there a lot of people who answer with “Batman”. It’s an interesting choice since Bruce Wayne/Batman is one of the few prominent heroes without any super-powers. However, that makes him one of the few superheroes us ordinary folks could actually become.
First appearing in Detective Comics #27 in 1939, Batman was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. The DC Comics character has definitely received the most adaptations having appeared in numerous films and television series. He has also benefited from a number of Elseworlds tales, placing the character and his supporting cast within different time periods.
He is vengeance. He is the night. He is the Dark Knight, the Caped Crusader, the World’s Greatest Detective… he’s the goddamn Batman.
So the question I ask today is: which iteration of Batman is your favorite?
I love Christian Bale and Ben Affleck’s versions of Batman as well as Kevin Conroy’s Batman from the DCAU. However, when I asked myself “Who is your Batman?”, the first one that popped into my mind was one from The Batman.
No, I’m not talking about the upcoming film with Robert Pattinson under the cowl. I’m talking about the animated series from the early 2000s. I had the toys and watched that show whenever it was on. However, while I enjoyed the storylines, I hated the character designs for Joker and Riddler. They were simply garbage. It’s not as great as Batman: The Animated Series (nothing ever will be), but it will always be fondly remembered by me.
So what about you, folks? Who is your Batman?
I’ll see you in the trenches.
