Our mission at SAW is to foster conversations about this thing we all love (or love to hate): film/TV. Many of our features are designed with you in mind. Your opinions, to be more to the point. You have ’em. We want to hear ’em.
Question of the Day (QOTD) is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a film/TV-related question that we put to you, the reader. The comments section below is like the feedback box at work; except, in this example, we actually read what you write and care about what you have to say.
Indiana Jones is considered to be the second greatest ’80s movie character of all time and a lot of that success is thanks to Harrison Ford’s performance as the adventurous archeologist. However, before Ford was cast, Tom Selleck was gearing up to don the fedora and whip for Raiders of the Lost Ark. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it), Selleck had to pull out after CBS decided to give Magnum, P.I. the greenlight. In the end, I think everybody won. Magnum made a star out of Tom Selleck and Indiana Jones cemented Ford’s A-list status.
But, let’s go down the “what if” rabbit hole just for fun because the question I ask today is: do you think Tom Selleck could have been a great Indiana Jones?
Look, I think an argument could be made that Magnum was the eighties version of Indiana Jones. He was technically a security consultant, but he found himself constantly getting into situations way above his pay grade. Instead of a fedora and a leather jacket, he had those sweet Hawaiian shirts, and the whip was replaced by a Ferrari. Both characters always got the girl and lived to see another day. I think Selleck would have been a good Indiana Jones, but I don’t think he’d have done a better job than Ford did. Granted, I still think Raiders of the Lost Ark would have been a box office success and spawned at least two more sequels.
Maybe the better question is to ask if Harrison Ford could have played Magnum better than Selleck?
So what about you, screenagers? Do you think Tom Selleck could have done Indy justice?
I’ll see you in the trenches.
