Afterlife with Archie will have a life on Disney+ after all.
Almost a year after it was first reported to be in development, Disney+ has greenlit a series adaptation of the Afterlife with Archie comics, Variety reports. The streamer is eyeing a Halloween 2027 launch for the horror-tinged show.
Afterlife with Archie is based on the comic book series from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla. The logline states, “When a supernatural spell from a certain teen-witch backfires, unleashing an army of the possessed dead upon Riverdale, Archie and his friends must fight to stay alive, testing the friendships, romances, and loyalties that have always held them together.”
Aguirre-Sacasa wrote the script and serves as executive producer alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, Jon Goldwater, and Jimmy Gibbons. Warner Bros. Television is the studio.
“Afterlife With Archie has always been about more than just zombies — it’s about the friendships, loyalty and humanity that make Riverdale worth fighting for,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family. “Roberto, Greg, Sarah and Jon have such a deep appreciation for these characters, and they’ve built something that’s equal parts thrilling and heartfelt. Fans are going to fall hard for this new version of the gang … and maybe scream a little too.”
Aguirre-Sacasa and Berlanti previously collaborated on the series Riverdale, a dark reimagining of the Archie comics that aired for seven seasons on The CW. It made stars out of its young cast, many of whom, like Camila Mendes and Charles Melton, have gone on to star in some pretty major projects.
The television adaptation of Afterlife with Archie comes as Aguirre-Sacasa is gearing up to bring the comic book version back from a 10-year hiatus. In October 2025, Aguirre-Sacasa wrote on Instagram: “But just as exciting (and in some ways, even MORE exciting), the incomparable @f_francavilla and I are resurrecting the OG comic book that truly started it all!!! Issues 11 and 12 have been written, I’m plotting 13 even as we speak, and Francesco’s already drawing!!! And every issue will be plus-sized and loaded with tons of bonus content! We’re beyond committed to making these next three issues worth the (extremely) long wait!”
