Amazon MGM Studios is taking a page from the Disney and DreamWorks playbook. The studio is developing a live-action remake of the beloved 1992 animated film FernGully: The Last Rainforest.
According to Deadline, Marielle Heller is set to direct FernGully from her own script. Stacey Sher will produce through Shiny Penny along with Susan Ursitti‑Sheinberg, Jon Sheinberg, and Matt Feige through Sheinberg Feige Organization (SFO Entertainment), and Defiant by Nature’s Heller and Leah Holzer.
The original FernGully is set in an Australian rainforest populated by fairies, one of whom accidentally shrinks a logger to fairy size. They band together to protect the rainforest from the logging business and an evil pollution entity named Hexxus.
FernGully featured the voices of Robin Williams, Tim Curry, Christian Slater, and Samantha Mathis. It also featured songs and performances by Elton John, Raffi, Sheena Easton, Curry, Williams, Johnny Clegg, and a song written by Jimmy Buffett.
A direct-to-video sequel, FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue, was released in 1998. None of the original voice cast reprised their roles.
Are you surprised FernGully is getting a live-action remake?
