Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has wrapped filming, according to LuckyChap Entertainment’s (Margot Robbie’s production banner) Instagram. Birds of Prey is the female-centric Suicide Squad spinoff starring Robbie, who is reprising her role as Harley Quinn from the 2016 David Ayer film. Prey has Harley teaming up against the film’s antagonist, Black Mask (played by Ewan McGregor), with fellow DC characters the Huntress, Black Canary, and Renee Montoya.
After some lackluster box office performances from DC films prior to Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and now Shazam!, it was unclear if this film was going to get the green light. But Robbie’s enthusiasm for the film helped get it into production ahead of Suicide Squad 2 and the once planned Joker/Harley Quinn spinoff that may or may not ever come to fruition. Robbie even helped select the film’s director and screenwriter, hiring on indie filmmaker Cathy Yan and Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson. The film also stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli aka Huntress, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Gotham City detective Rnee Montoya and Chris Messina as baddie Victor Zsasz
Birds of Prey won’t hit theaters until next February, but it’s the next in a series of ambitious films from WB/DC like Shazam! and Joaquin Phoenix’s dramatic take on Joker, followed by the highly anticipated sequel Wonder Woman 1984.
