Tom Holland and Joe & Anthony Russo are taking a break from Marvel movies to work on Cherry, the story of a former Army medic who returns from Iraq with extreme undiagnosed PTSD who falls into an opioid addiction, and begins robbing banks. It is based on the semi-autobiographical book of the same name by Nico Walker.
Holland had been the sole cast member since March (he even recently shaved his hair off for the role – much to the dismay of his fans), but with production ramping up more casting is being finalized. Ciara Bravo has landed the female lead role, while Bill Skarsgard, Jack Reynor, Forrest Goodluck, Jeffrey Wahlberg, Michael Gandolfini, and Kyle Harvey have been cast in supporting roles.
In a past statement, the Russos explained what made them pick Cherry as their first non-Marvel feature:
“We were drawn to Cherry given our personal experience from Cleveland, as well as the important need to share stories like these. As Cleveland natives ourselves, it means a lot to us to be able to film in our hometown. We shot the exteriors for Winter Soldier here, we are excited to return home to our roots.”
Filming is slated to begin in October. This looks like an interesting story, and I’m excited to see the Russos and Holland in something non-Marvel related. We’ll keep you updated as the film enters production.
Are you interested in checking out Cherry whenever it gets released? Excited to see Holland in a non-Spidey role?
